Kate Middleton has had the most lovely maternity wardrobe, it's no surprise Vanity Fair named the Duchess of Cambridge the best-dressed pregnant woman. The classic, figure-flattering garments she's worn in recent months would look incredible on any woman—pregnant or not. Middleton may not have shown off her bump on the red carpet as do pregnant stars in Hollywood, but she had an abundance of formal affairs to attend, and she managed them all with the style and grace we've come to adore and appreciate. Whether dressed in adjustable wrap dresses or chic wool coats, Middleton has stuck to simple silhouettes that work and relied on her well-worn signature accessories (we're looking at you, L.K. Bennett and Episode pumps). Sayonara muumuus and maternity jeans—Middleton's maternity style has made every pregnant lady rethink her wardrobe.
At Queen Elizabeth's birthday parade on June 15. For her last public appearance before her due date, Middleton wore custom Alexander McQueen as she stood in the balcony of Buckingham Palace during the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony. The light wool crepe coat features flattering side darts, three-quarter sleeves, an oversized collar, and big pearl buttons. Her coordinating hat is by Jane Corbett, and she wore it once before at the queen's Buckingham Palace garden party in 2012. She accessorized with a small gray clutch, pretty pearl earrings, and, best of all, an ear-to-ear grin. |
Attending the Princess Cruises ship-naming ceremony in Southampton, June 13. As the godmother of the Royal Princess ship, Middleton was on hand for a traditional blessing that involved smashing a bottle of Champagne on the ship's hull. For the playful occasion, the duchess wore a $265 Dalmatian print Mac coat by Hobbs, a High Street retailer. While the coat looks heavy, the linen and rayon blend is cooler for summer months, and it immediately sold out after the Middleton sighting. With the bold coat she kept accessories simple. Her $1,095 Alexander McQueen Wicca mini-satchel and $460 black hat by Sylvia Fletcher for Lock and Company completed the look. |
Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation at Westminster Abbey, June 4. Middleton opted for a pale pink, knee-length Jenny Packham coat with three-quarter sleeves—clearly a favorite shape for the duchess. Her matching blush lace dress featured an empire waist and fringe trim. |
At the queen's annual garden party at Buckingham Palace, May 22. For this sunny event, Middleton selected the Marella coat by New Zealand designer Emilia Wickstead. It retailed for a $1,826, but was quick to sell out. To complement the yellow coat, she added a $300 Russell & Bromley Park Avenue clutch, Jane Corbett hat, and pearl earrings. |
In one of her first appearances looking noticeably pregnant, the duchess showed off her growing bump at the National Review of the Queen's Scouts at Windsor Castle, on April 21. Middleton wore Mulberry's frayed coat in mint cotton tweed, which retails for $3,000 and is already sold out online. She paired it with a matching mint broderie anglaise dress, Kiki McDonough diamond and green amethyst earrings, and nude pumps and a matching clutch, both by L.K. Bennett. To top off her look, she recycled a brown Whiteley fascinator from her prepregnancy days. |
Presenting the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC's annual Sports Personality of the Year Awards, December 16 For her first official engagement since her hospital stay, the duchess wore an Alexander McQueen bell-sleeve peplum gown with a thigh-high slit. Wow! |
At the unveiling of her portrait at the National Portrait Gallery, January 11 Though Middleton was still not really showing yet, this burgundy silk Sofie Rae dress from Whistles makes for very flattering maternity wear, as the high waistline hits at just the right place. Her black Episode Angel pumps have a small platform for added comfort. |
Visiting Hope House Treatment Center, February 19 One of Kate's main maternity tips: Wrap it up. This MaxMara Studio wrap dress is adjustable and could easily be worn throughout her pregnancy. The V-neck is flattering, too. |
